Let’s Talk About Archetypes

In the realm of men's work, the echoes of Moore, Bly, and Campbell have reverberated for decades, guiding many on a transformative journey through the Lover, Warrior, Magician, and King archetypes. As I traversed my own path of healing, these archetypes became companions in the dance of my everyday life, from the yearning Lover to the dominating Shadow Warrior, the practical Magician to the abdicating King. They became my compass for balancing the push and pull of existence and unraveling the mysteries of my subconscious.

Yet, in the midst of this familiar terrain, a whisper emerged, a subtle call for something more. A feeling that I had reached a plateau, missing a crucial piece that eluded my gaze. Serendipity intervened during a visit to an obscure bookstore in Olympia. While my partner sought hidden treasures in the occult and astrology section, my instincts led me elsewhere.

In the labyrinth of personal development, UFOs, and mysticism, I scoured titles with fervor. Climbing a bench to extend my search, victory seemed elusive until I reached the apex of the store—Initiations. Bingo! Amidst the spines, "Awakening The Hero's Within" by Carol S. Pearson beckoned, a revelation waiting to unfold.

The Orphan

As I delved into its pages, I struck gold. Not four archetypes but twelve. A meticulous analysis of how these archetypes weave through our lives, creating cycles of influence. Pearson's exploration, starting with the Innocent, embracing safety, to the Fool embodying joy and freedom, revealed a nuanced understanding of the human journey.

As I continued flipping through the pages, a storm of revelation brewed within me. Stumbling upon an Archetypes & Addictions chart, each connection resonated with a thunderous agreement until a lightning bolt of self-awareness struck me. The blind spot, sensed but unseen, became vivid as I delved into the addictive quality of the Sage archetype—“Judgmentalism” manifesting through the use of “being right/tranquilizers.” A pattern of recognition flashed before my eyes, an undeniable truth.

Amid the relentless heat of self-awareness, I faced the crucible of truth, a stark confrontation with the shadow behavior intricately woven into the very fabric of my close bonds, particularly with my partner. It hit me like a relentless storm—I had been an unyielding judge, a constant source of challenge, incessantly pointing out areas that needed improvement. And it wasn't just confined to the intimate realm; this judgmental lens extended to my co-workers, family, and friends. I found myself holding them to a standard, at times, so lofty and unattainable that it bordered on the absurd.

This revelation, like a sharp blade, cut through the illusions I had woven around my relationships. It exposed the harsh reality that I had become a relentless arbiter, a constant critic, measuring those around me against an ideal that even I, in moments of clarity, recognized as impractical.

It's crucial to acknowledge that, as a child, this judgmental stance served as my shield, a guardian that ensured my survival countless times. Without this awareness, reaching the age of 20 might have been an improbable feat. However, the crux of the matter is that this protective mechanism no longer serves my best interests. Now, the real work begins—how do I untangle this behavior from the woman and people I care and love most? They are not my demise; they are my haven.

The Lover

In the forge of my extensive personal development journey, navigating the complexities of team leadership, and steering various companies across diverse industries, coupled with maintaining over 14 years of sobriety, a profound and unwavering call to action has been ignited within my soul.

As I stand at the crossroads of experience and responsibility, I am compelled to answer this call by embarking on a transformative venture in the beginning of Spring 2024.
